Old Mission Peninsula is a narrow strip of land that divides Grand Traverse Bay into East and West arms, stretching about 18 miles north of Traverse City. It sits on the 45th parallel the same latitude as Bordeaux, France which gives it the ideal climate for producing world-class cool-climate wines. The views are stunning, the roads are winding, and the wineries are close together making it one of the most enjoyable wine regions in the Midwest to explore by car.

Planning Your Old Mission Wine Day

Old Mission is more compact than Leelanau you can realistically visit 4 to 6 wineries in a day without feeling rushed. The peninsula is a there-and-back drive, so the easiest approach is to pick a cluster of stops on the way up and a few more on the way back.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Most tasting rooms open between 10 AM and noon plan accordingly

  • Weekends in summer and fall fill up fast, especially at the most popular stops

  • Check individual winery websites for seasonal hours before you go

  • Reservations are recommended at several locations during peak season
